Details
This sculpture depicts the iconic minaret of the Ibn Tulun Mosque, a captivating landmark in Cairo. Made from polyster, it captures the intricate details of the minaret’s architecture. The spiral staircase that winds its way up the interior of the minaret is visible through the open arches (mashrabya). Geometric patterns adorn the exterior, a hallmark of Abbasid architecture. The mosque was built on a small hill called Gebel Yashkur, which translates to "The Hill of Thanksgiving." Legend has it that this hill is where Noah's Ark came to rest after the Deluge. Originally, the mosque backed onto Ibn Tulun's palace, and a door next to the minbar (pulpit) allowed him direct entry into the mosque.
